Chris Hemsworth may have become the first actor to headline four solo Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters, but character-wise he’ll be joined by a certain star-studded Avengers when Captain America: New World Order hits theaters May 3, 2024.

All three of Chris Evans‘ outings as Steve Rogers have been major critical and commercial successes, so Anthony Mackie stepped in to inherit the shield, which puts enormous personal and professional pressure on the actor in more ways than one. Yesterday’s D23 Expo revealed new details about the film, including the surprise return of The Incredible HulkTim Blake Nelson as the lead, with director Julius Onah dropping even more info during an interview with ComicBook.

“Listen, he takes on a new position to become the leader as Captain America. It’s going to be a new set of challenges for him, and in this story, a big part of his journey is, how do you define that leadership? That’s the thing he hasn’t had to deal with yet. As Falcon, he’s always been there to support the rest of the team, but now he’s leading the team, and I think it’s going to be a really exciting journey to take with him.

Mackie might be disappointed that Sebastian Stan isn’t joining him (at least not yet), but Onah went on to tease that the freshly minted Cape is going to have so much on his plate that he won’t have time to worry about it. absence of his best friend.

“There are a lot of things that we are going to bring to the table. And it’s a new set of challenges and a new set of opponents. I love classic paranoid thrillers and that’s a big part of the inspiration for this movie. We want to find grounded, tactile action and give it some new things to do that we haven’t seen in these other movies, and I don’t want to spoil too much, but let’s just say we’re planning some really, really exciting stuff.

The First Avenger, The Winter Soldierand Civil war are held in high regard by MCU fans, so hopefully Onah, Mackie, and the rest of the crew can deliver a worthy successor in New world order.
