Disney has announced that the hit animated film “Chicken Run” will arrive on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland on Friday July 15, 2022.

Trapped behind barbed wire, Ginger, Bunty and Fowler are chickens with a mission. They are determined to take a break for freedom, but each escape becomes “chicken” when they are caught by the evil Mrs. Tweedy who wants to turn them into pies. When an all-American rooster lands on the farm, Ginger sees his chance and together they prove the chicken is anything but, as they embark on a daring escape.

“Chicken Run” is directed by Nick Park and Peter Lord. It stars Mel Gibson, Phil Daniels and Julia Sawalha.

This film is added as part of a wider offering of British-made films that are being added to Disney+ in the UK and Ireland to help fulfill a quota, which requires that at least 30% of the content offered in a streaming service, is carried out within Europe. It also helps to stimulate interest from British and Irish viewers, who want to watch films and shows they can more easily relate to.

Are you looking forward to watching “Chicken Run” on Disney+?

Abbott Elementary, Disney Plus/Hulu review – witty mockumentary enters the classroom https://passionrecut.com/abbott-elementary-disney-plus-hulu-review-witty-mockumentary-enters-the-classroom/ Mon, 20 Jun 2022 04:00:44 +0000 https://passionrecut.com/abbott-elementary-disney-plus-hulu-review-witty-mockumentary-enters-the-classroom/ As the principal of a school filled with underpaid, half-fried teachers, children capable of “psychological warfare,” and maintenance issues ranging from flickering lights to stinging walls and escaped snakes, Ava Coleman ( Janelle James) would do well not to draw attention to its shortcomings. As the principal of a school filled with underpaid, half-fried teachers, children capable of “psychological warfare,” and maintenance issues ranging from flickering lights to stinging walls and escaped snakes, Ava Coleman ( Janelle James) would do well not to draw attention to its shortcomings. But the director is optimistic about the publicity a documentary could generate. “No press is bad press – look at Mel Gibson,” she tells her unconvinced staff.

Abbott Elementary School, a delightful single-camera sitcom streaming on Disney Plus, brings the mockumentary to the teachers’ lounge and classrooms of a Philadelphia public school. If it goes without saying that the apotheosis of the format was reached 20 years ago with Office (or four decades ago with It’s Spinal Tap), he is a diligent student of his comedic ancestors. It may not be groundbreaking or iconoclastic, but there’s something to be said for mastering the ABCs of witty yet easy-to-digest comedy.

While Ava’s megalomania is easily comparable to that of David Brent (or Michael Scott, for those more familiar with American Desk), she is more of a scene stealer than the center of the show. Instead, the formidable ensemble is led by rookie teacher Janine (played by series creator Quinta Brunson). Despite the demands of the job and the principal’s low corruption, Janine’s childlike enthusiasm for her job is undiminished. Now entering her second year at Abbott, she sets out to make things better – from replacing a soiled carpet to hiring a resident artist – with varying degrees of success.

The formidable alum Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) believes in making the most of what’s available. Quick to be biting, she also helps taciturn new recruit Gregory deal with difficult students and their equally earthy parents. He’s played by Tyler James Williams, who surely owes Martin Freeman royalties for his frequent puzzled looks on camera. Rounding out the group are hipster Jacob (Chris Perfetti) and middle-aged Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter), whose gruff exterior belies that she’s sweet as Philadelphia cream cheese on the inside.

Each of these characters have easily identifiable personalities but the show is careful not to indulge in stereotypes or cheap laughs. The tone is warm rather than tumultuous and the humor cynical rather than full-bodied. The cringe factor may make you squirm, but it won’t make you scrape your skin in embarrassment.

For all the sharp and referential dialogue, cutscenes and unexpected throwaway gags, Abbott Elementary School disarmingly succeeds in reminding us of the value of dedicated teachers who care for their students even when their own employers don’t. “We are social workers. We are therapists. We are second parents,” Barbara says at one point. It might not be the funniest line in the series, but it might be the truest.

Happy Friday, Polygon readers! This week brings a slew of new movie releases to streaming services and to rent or buy on VOD.

We would be remiss not to mention Morbius, which is now available at a reduced rental price of $5.99. Please Morb responsibly.

spider head

Picture: Netflix

Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski and the screenwriters of dead Pool team up to adapt a dystopian short story from George Saunders” is a true description of a real movie that really exists. Set in a state-of-the-art penitentiary where inmates are forced to undergo a series of mind-altering drug trials in exchange for commuted sentences, spider head follows the story of Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), two test subjects who form an unlikely connection under the watchful eye of Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), an elusive tech visionary whose deranged philosophy of “better living through chemistry” threatens the sanity (and life) of everyone in the facility.

In our opinion:

Despite the dystopian premise, Kosinski brings a light touch to spider head. Colorful cinematography and fiery editing contrast the tragic backstories and dark living conditions of the characters, and highlight the disparity between the chemically-induced nightmarish highs and lows of Abnesti’s experiments. Midway through the film, Abnesti asks Jeff to describe the worst day of his life as two’s trip on a feel-good drug. Jeff recalls the day his father abandoned him, laughing hysterically the whole time. This general mood of emotional boost runs through everyone spider headand Kosinski effectively exploits its sinister undertones.

In our opinion:

One of the important lessons of Venomsuccess was that if unimaginative superhero franchise films to have to be produced, they can still feel useful if fueled by smart and fun performances. Audiences show up for characters they love, but they also show up for characters played by peopleby actors who give them bizarre quirks and specific mannerisms. Morbius this is what happens when there is a studio desire for another Venombut without thinking too much about how Venom connected with anyone. He’s only there to connect with a burgeoning crossover franchise. (As a pair of nonsensical mid-credits scenes indicate.)

The worst person in the world

Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu

Picture: Neon

The third film in what has been described as director Joachim Trier’s “Oslo trilogy” The worst person in the world is a dark romantic comedy centered on Julie (Renate Reinsve), a medical student who stumbles upon a disappointing love life and troubled career path. Following her through four years of her life, the film explores Julie’s stunted growth to maturity and her emotional blocks about love, life and professional success.

From our roundup of the best movies of 2021:

Trier spices up with magical, realistic touches that further enliven an already compelling storyline supported by nuanced three-dimensional characters. Reinsve’s groundbreaking performances give the film its most striking element. She evokes her character’s conflicted state in a captivating way, with seductive effervescence and authentic personality. The ever-memorable actor Anders Danielsen Lie, a regular Trier collaborator, completes his work in a harrowing, but still intellectually stimulating role as one of his partners.

We’ve already had a chance to praise the new Top Gun movie which came out last month, and so far it’s the best summer action flick out of them all. This blog post will focus on Downton Abbey and the Professor and the Madman. The latter was condemned by Covid not to appear in theaters in 2020-21, and so I saw him on the plane returning from Istanbul. This is a true story of how the OED, the Oxford English Dictionary, was compiled, and has a clear Christian message. The first has already had a good month in theaters and is a fun period piece. Let’s take care of Downton first.

As we catch up with the Crawleys (who aren’t scary critters), we’ve come to the dawn of 1930. The conceit of the film is that “Granny” (Maggie Smith) has somehow inherited a villa in the south of France …. and as she asks her family “do I look like a person who would turn down a villa in the south of France?” Obviously not, because she was born at the mansion. The other intrigue is that a silent movie is going to be shot at Downton, which before it’s finished turns into a talky, one of the first. The film begins with a wedding and ends with a funeral, and in between we have two marriage proposals. The film is two hours and a bit long, and has the usual charming Julian Fellowes dialogue as usual, although I have to admit the banter came so fast towards the start of the film that it felt a little contrived. Never mind, if you like these people and are interested in their next adventures, you will overlook the little flaws and enjoy the scenes that make you laugh and those that could make you cry. At the very heart of the story is of course Mary alias Michelle Dockery, now the mistress of Downton, whose husband gallops, and does not make an appearance in this film. All the other familiar faces and a few new ones are present and accounted for. If this is the last hurray for the Downton gang, they’re definitely coming out in style, and I mean amazing clothes, stages, homes, furniture, and estates. An interesting development is that Lord Granville has lost considerable weight. It seems good. I enjoyed this movie a lot and luckily there is no violence, profanity or anything really objectionable in the movie. It’s a good family movie.

Then there’s the great professor and madman drama starring Sean Penn and Mel Gibson, which should have been nominated for an Oscar for this film. He plays the central character, James Murray, a Scottish scholar who did the heavy lifting to create the dictionary. It is absolutely a true story. In desperation, he enlists an incarcerated and somewhat crazed American who suffered from what we would call American Civil War PTSD, and in the end was diagnosed with a bipolar condition. This movie is also just over two hours long and is one of the best dramas I’ve seen in a long time, especially if you limit yourself to those with a Christian theme, in this case about forgiveness and God’s grace. The acting is superb, the snobbery of the Oxford professors is believable, since Murray doesn’t have a college degree, he’s just a brilliant linguist, and the continuing effect of trying to produce this dictionary on woman and Murray’s family, not to mention Dr. William a surgeon who mistakenly shot a man he thought was pursuing him and landed in jail, but was given books to research the origins and usage of the words.

In many ways, this film is compelling, heartbreaking, and in the end a story of achievement, liberation, and even love against all odds. It’s such a shame that this movie, based on a great book, wasn’t released in the US this year, but I guess they figured that since 2019 was its originally planned release date, there were too many water under the bridge. It’s far better, as a serious, true drama, than any other similar movie released this year. Although painful to see the deterioration of Dr. William who is subjected to the abuse of quack medicine and the experiences of this era, there is still a story of overcoming and redemption to be told as well. I plan to use scenes from this film in teaching, especially the scene about God’s prevenient grace and the need to believe in forgiveness as a Christian. I ended up crying at the end of this one.

Jordan Peele has elevated his repertoire outside of the comedy genre, proving to fans who go out was just the beginning. After a career built on sketch comedy, he finally did the thinking We and was one of the engineers of The twilight zone to restart. However, as original and fresh as Peele’s vision is, in the latest trailer for the mysterious Nope, there is a key element that seems copied from a famous director of the genre, M. Night Shyamalan. And this pastiche can do Nope this generation Panelsonly with a more tense atmosphere.

In 2002 Panels, Shyamalan had Mel Gibson‘s Graham hold with his family at their Pennsylvania farmhouse. Both children, and even Graham’s brother, Merrill, were convinced aliens were haunting them. It came after hearing things being knocked over at night and shadows stalking them like prey.

RELATED: Firestarter Has Fallen Prey to One of Horror’s Tiredest Tropes

Graham, distraught and losing faith over the death of his wife months earlier, realized they were right. As a result, they got on board and tried to find a way out, creating a warm emotional dynamic of a family putting aside differences to work together for a greater purpose. Or, as Graham felt, a higher heavenly calling.

Nope seems to work from a similar angle with OJ and his sister, Emerald, who board their farm due to an equally obscure UFO haunting. And to make matters worse, the siblings try to come to terms with their father’s death, complicating their judgment as they search for the truth. What adds to the family dynamic is that they team up with a tech salesman Angel and a documentarian named Antlers, again creating a family of four.

RELATED: From Firestarter to It, Stephen King Has Mastered the Bullying Scene

The trailer has them bonding, breaking bread, plotting a way to get evidence, and in a dispute. This ties into Peele’s past films, where family and trauma play a major role. But this time, the dimly lit shots of people from Nope house – petrified, confused and wondering if the enemy is physical or mental – brings to mind what Shyamalan has been up to with Graham’s pack.

In Nope cases, there will be more disunity, however, because, as seen from Angel stopping Emerald from coming out to save OJ and Antlers seedy attitude, it might be hard to trust people who don’t are not of your blood. Panels had no problem with that as they were all related, but Nope could hide deeper cuts and ulterior motives about ties to strangers in these desperate times. Either way, it’s still an emotional direction, leaving fans hopeful that this alliance will succeed like Graham’s family did when they slew their enemy and embraced a water-filled world that aliens could no longer inhabit.

To see if Jordan Peele’s latest film is similar to Signs, Nope hits theaters on July 22.

Sequels have the power to inspire appreciation or disdain in viewers, especially if the movie takes a long time to hit theaters. Some of the most beloved and popular movies follow on from cinematic treasures, and it’s no surprise that such projects end up having quite a legacy to match. Audiences often yearn to reconnect with beloved characters and worlds, eagerly anticipating future episodes of their favorite movies. When a sequel takes a long time to complete, the anticipation of the finished product can be both exciting and laborious.

The highly publicized sequel to Legacy Top Gun: Maverickhas Tom Cruise reprising his iconic role as a naval aviator, premiering 36 years after his predecessor and becoming a huge blockbuster hit. After dazzling moviegoers with its groundbreaking visual effects and stunning cinematography in the 2009 sci-fi juggernaut Avatar, director James Cameron has two coveted Avatar sequels slated for release later this year and in 2024. Let’s take a closer look at some of the biggest movie sequels that were worth the very long wait.

8 Toy Story 3

Audiences around the world fell in love with the crazy antics of cowboy Woody and space ranger Buzz Lightyear in beloved 90s classics toy story and toy story 2, with the two characters serving as leaders of a group of toys that come to life when the humans aren’t around. The first follow-up to the hit franchise was released in 1999, four years after toy storyand was billed as one of the few superior sequels to the original; toy story 2 was a critical and commercial success and earned a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Pixar announced that a new sequel was in the works after 11 years, fans of the animated films were skeptical of its ability to live up to its predecessor. Oscar winner Toy Story 3brilliantly proved the naysayers wrong in 2010, becoming a smash hit and earning over $1 billion while earning acclaim for its emotional storytelling and depth, animation, vocal performances, and moving soundtrack.

seven Rocky Balboa

16 years after the release of Rocky V, Sylvester Stallone made his highly anticipated return as the iconic boxer and former heavyweight champion in the 2006 sports drama Rocky Balboa, which follows the now-retired eponymous character as he is challenged to an exhibition bout against fierce boxer Mason Dixon. Not only did Stallone reprise his career-building role, but he also wrote the script and directed the picture, bringing back fellow stars Burt Young and Tony Burton and their counterparts Paulie Pennino and Tony “Duke” Evers.

Stallone began development on a sixth installment after expressing disappointment with the outcome of Rocky V, believing it to be a lackluster conclusion to the famed franchise. Rocky Balboa was a hit with critics and audiences alike, with Stallone earning praise for his touching performance and for the moving exploration of the character, with many calling him one of Rockythe best entries.

6 The color of money

Legendary big-screen actor Paul Newman returned as notorious pool hustler and pious Edward “Fast Eddie” Felson in the 1986 sports drama The color of money, based on Walter Tevis’ novel of the same name and serving as a sequel to his 1961 classic The scammer. Set over 25 years after the events of the original image, the follow-up focuses on a now-retired Eddie as he takes an arrogant but gifted nine-ball player (Tom Cruise) under his wing and shows him the hustling pool tricks, ultimately inspiring Eddie to get back into the game.

Revered Martin Scorsese directed the thrilling drama, with the sequel serving as his first foray into mainstream cinema; Newman personally reached out to Scorsese via a fan letter asking the director to helm the film. The movie icon’s efforts paid off as he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance, his first win after seven nominations.

5 bad boys for life

Fans of hilarious Miami sleuths Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett couldn’t get enough of the wise-cracking duo in the Bad Boys candor, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence dazzling viewers with their charming chemistry. After appearing in the 1995s Bad Boys and 2003 bad boys II, the comedic superstars walked away from the action-packed series for 17 years before finally giving audiences what they wanted and serving up a third episode.

In the 2020s bad boys for life, the thrilling comedy catches up with detectives as they investigate the wife and son of a Mexican crime lord as they wreak havoc on the city, while dealing with an elite young team who aid them. bad boys for life became the franchise’s highest-grossing film and was also the most well-received, with countless critics calling it a huge improvement over its predecessors.

4 jurassic world

Serve as the fourth slice of the jurassic park franchise and the first of the new trilogy, the 2015 sci-fi action film jurassic world brings the spectacular dinosaurs to the big screen after a 14-year hiatus, this time following Navy veteran and ethologist Owen Grady as he fights to protect vacationers at the titular theme park after a genetically modified dinosaur escaped confinement and terrorized the island.

Related: Chris Pratt Compares Jurassic World Dominion To The Marvel Cinematic Universe

After the gloom of 2001 Jurassic Park III, The franchise’s writers set out to incorporate three of Steven Spielberg’s ideas for a sequel: a human having a relationship with trained raptors, a dangerous human-eating dinosaur on the loose, and a fully functioning dinosaur theme park. jurassic world was a knockout blow to critics and audiences alike and launched a lucrative trilogy starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and helped breathe new life into the iconic film series.

3 The Incredibles 2

Pixar’s 2004 animated superhero film The Incredibles celebrates chronicling the misadventures of the Parr family, residents of Metroville who are forced to hide their superhero abilities after the government forces the “supers” to give up all crime-fighting for good. The fun and thrilling film was a mega-hit, winning two Oscars and becoming a hit with audiences young and old; it is widely considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time.

With such high standards, talk of a sequel has been both welcomed by fans but speculated by critics due to the high bar. The Incredibles 2far exceeded moviegoers’ expectations, with the follow-up detailing the efforts of The Incredibles as they attempt to restore public faith and trust in superheroes. It went on to receive accolades for its stunning animation, script, humor, and performances, and grossed $1.2 billion at the box office.

2 Top Gun: Maverick

The essential Tom Cruise of 1986 Superior gun featured the famed Hollywood heavy hitter as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a tenacious young naval aviator who fights to be top of his class at the U.S. Navy’s Fighter Weapons School. The action flick helped cement Cruise’s status as a movie superstar and became a staple of the 1980s, with rumors of a long-awaited sequel starting to swirl in earnest around 2010.

After development problems and production hiccups, Top Gun: Maverickfinally made its world premiere at CinemaCon 2022, dominating the box office and earning critical acclaim for its jaw-dropping visuals, dynamite performances, and thrilling storyline. The film follows Mitchell, now one of the Navy’s top airmen, as he forms a group of Top Gun graduates and is forced to confront disturbing ghosts from his past. Top Gun: Maverick was deemed by many critics to be far superior to its predecessor, and was credited with reinvigorating the film industry.

1 Mad Max: Fury Road

Simultaneously serving as both a reboot and fourth installment of the post-apocalyptic action franchise madmax, the big screen show of 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy in the famous role of Max Rockatansky, with fellow star Mel Gibson passing the baton to the actor for the adrenaline-pumping image. Director George Miller was eager to make a sequel to 1985 Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome but ran into financial difficulties and the project ultimately spent years in development hell; the film was finally greenlit in 2009, with the sequel serving as the “rebirth” of the franchise.

Mad Max: Fury Road focuses on the titular character as he teams up with Imperator Furiosa in an effort to escape the infamous cult leader Immortan Joe and his deranged army. road of fury won numerous accolades and critical acclaim for its fantastic performances, action sequences and direction, winning six Academy Awards and being heralded as one of the greatest action films of all time.

Hollywood has always had a penchant for telling the story, romanticizing real events, and subtly shaping the narrative into something we can learn from or aspire to. That’s exactly what one of the first feature films, “Birth of a Nation”, does.

Filmed in 1915, the film begins with the end of the Civil War and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln – an event that took place some 50 years before the film was released in the 1910s – then turns into a fantasy about the how the Ku Klux Klan was a heroic force, essential to preserving “American values”. While not all period films are equally harmful or blatantly racist, almost all fall into the trap of romanticizing periods or events that are long past.

Idealization, of course, is not always a bad thing. Many of us turn to movies as an escape from our daily lives. Coupled with the nostalgia we often feel for the past (even a past we ourselves never knew), and you have the recipe for the perfect, profitable project.

Giggster ranked the 10 highest-grossing period plays using data from The Numbers national box office. For this classification, period pieces are considered films set in a historical period relative to when they were shot. This ranking also focuses on films grounded in reality – historical films with fantasy or supernatural elements were generally excluded from this ranking. Films are sorted by their inflation-adjusted domestic gross.

You’ll notice that seven of these films were released in the seven years between 1997 and 2004, solidifying the late 1990s and early 2000s as something of a golden age for period films. Those of us who enjoy a good period drama can only hope that the recent wave of historical hits – with 2019’s “Little Women” and 2021’s “Belfast” and “West Side Story” – indicates that we are at the dawn of another golden era.

Jeri Jacquin

Coming this week on 4K Ultra HD, Bluray and DVD from director Michael Bay and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is the chase with an AMBULANCE.

Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is a struggling veteran trying to get medical help for his wife. Receiving no help on the phone, Will keeps the family calm but wants to go visit the one person his wife wants him to stay away from – his brother Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Needing money, Will turns to Danny knowing his adopted brother is a bit of a criminal. Oh heck, he’s a LOT of a criminal and all he has to do is charm Will to agree to help him. The payout is a bank swipe worth more millions than either can count.

On the other side of town, paramedic Cam (Eiza Gonzalez) is hard at work at her job. Jumping from call to call, his driver tries to understand his motivation and distance. When the bank robbery goes from bad to worse, she recognizes the gunshot and walks towards him. They find an officer on the ground and get him into the ambulance.

Officer Zac (Jackson White) is in no condition to help when Danny takes the ambulance and its occupants hostage. Law enforcement begins to respond under Captain Monroe (Garret Dillahunt) and the chase is on. Unsure what they’re dealing with, FBI agent Anson Clark (Keir O’Donnell) knows exactly who Danny is and what he’s willing to do to get away.

Danny asks for all kinds of favors while Will tries to help save Officer Zac and save Cam from getting hurt. Choices will have to be made and both men are ready to make them. It’s not a good day for criminals or law enforcement when they’re chasing that particular ambulance.

Gyllenhaal as Danny is witty, lively, charming, and unafraid to use any means necessary to get what he wants. Dragging his brother Will into the mess isn’t exactly what he would have wanted but sees it as a way to help his brother. In a weird way, I love Gyllenhaal in this role because of the way this character’s mind works and the madness that comes out of his mouth.

Abdul-Mateen II as Will wants one thing and one thing only – help for his family. Knowing that he needs Danny’s help hurts as much as what’s going to happen for the rest of the day. Danny is a last resort but leaves Will no other alternative, or so he thinks. Abdul-Mateen II gives his character something his brother doesn’t have – a conscience.

Gonzalez as Cam has her own reasons for being naughty and she’s not about to share them with anyone. She wants to do her job, do it well, and go home at the end of the day. Gonzalez gives his character a quick think under paramedic pressure who keeps a close eye on everything that’s going on. Confronting Danny is not a good idea but Gonzalez gives us a girl who will stand up.

Dillahunt as Captain Monroe sees what happens as a bit of a steamy mess as Danny and Will seem to take over the town. It doesn’t take a lot of nerve, but it certainly gives it in bite-size pieces. O’Donnell as Agent Clark tries to communicate that he knows about Danny’s tastes, his past with the law, and why he thinks the way he does. Trying to stay one step ahead is exhausting, but O’Donnell sees a shocking end to it.

Other cast members include Olivia Stambouliah as Lt. Dzaghig, Colin Woodell as EMT Scott, Moses Ingram as Amy Sharp, Cedric Sanders as Officer Mark, Jesse Garcia as Roberto, Jose Pablo Cantillo as as Jesus, Wale as Castro, Devan Chandler Long as Devan ‘Mel Gibson‘ Long, Randazzo Marc as Randazzo, Victor Gojcaj as Victor, Briella Guiza as Lindsey, and A. Martinez as Papi.

AMBULANCE is a thrill ride from start to finish that doesn’t let the viewer barely catch their breath. There’s so much action that takes over the senses, leaving little time to ask many questions.

From a police shootout to an ambulance chase, there are twists that law enforcement doesn’t see coming. There are also turns the bank robbers didn’t seem to anticipate. Danny and Will take on a very intense paramedic in Cam, but there’s a method to get the ambulance moving – preferably as fast as possible!

If you’re looking for a thrill ride with a super big screen and a soundbar to test it all out, then AMBULANCE will give you it all and more. Prepare for the intensity and the chase and make sure to breathe!

In the end, it was supposed to be a simple robbery!
