Chris Hemsworth Might Have His Own Cinematic Universe With Extraction
Good news for fans of Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, the world’s tired mercenary Netflix action movie Extraction: he is alive. (Shock.)
Netflix recently released a trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s action thriller. New footage shows Rake at the bottom of a river – the previous film ended with him falling from a bridge after being shot in the neck. In the trailer, Rake then opens his eyes as a sound clip of Ovi Mahajan, the child he was tasked with saving, plays over the footage.
Hemsworth confirmed that he is indeed back for the sequel, which will again be directed by Sam Hargrave.
The Extraction the expansion might not stop with a sequel, either. According to writer Joe Russo, there are preliminary plans for a new film franchise – The Extraction Expanded universe, including a possible spin-off for Gaspar, the other haggard mercenary played by David Harbor.
It wouldn’t be a very surprising development: Extraction was a big hit for Netflix, and the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony) were instrumental in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including management Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War. So with Extraction 2 already in the works, Joe Russo told fans more could be on the way.
“I’m still not going to commit because I think it’s more exciting to surprise people,” he said at a press conference. CCXP virtual shutterI, “but I’ll say this: We’re working on building a universe of movies that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters. So if you’re interested in David Harbor character, you may be able to see him in the future Extraction movie.”
This certainly leaves a lot of possibilities open. The original film hinted at a rich history for Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, including his relationship with Harbor’s Gaspar. There are been clues that Chris Evans can join the cast of the sequel and that Oscar Issac can get on board as a villainous drug lord.
So far, everything has been kept in fairly tight envelopes.
When is Extraction 2 coming to Netflix?
No release date announcement yet, only a promise from the trailer that the film will be “soon”. What “soon” means for Netflix is a guess. Our guess: before the end of the year.
