House of Gucci: Lady Gaga and Jared Leto in search of another Oscar

If you thought “Borat” (2006) started a pop culture craze with patrons echoing lines for years, wait for Lady Gaga’s portrayal of legendary murderer Patrizia Reggiani in the campy “House of Gucci “by Ridley Scott makes her one of the top contenders for Best Actress.

Gaga ticks so many boxes that previous Oscar winners for Best Actress have ticked: she’s a beloved pop icon playing a gorgeous, crazy celebrity and a money-seeker. “She’s like my first wife…” you can almost hear the elders say over the cigars.

Gaga, who is 35, has already won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Shallow” from Bradley Cooper’s 2018 movie “A Star Is Born”, for which she was also nominated for Best Actress. She lost the acting award to Olivia Colman (“The Favorite”), who is still in contention this year for her role in the drama “The Lost Daughter” by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Is it possible that the Academy will award an actor trophy to someone who is in their second feature film? Looking at previous winners like Cher for “Moonstruck” (1987) and Barbra Streisand for “Funny Girl” (1968), it’s clear that the Academy has a soft spot for artists who switch from one medium to another. Many of the top contenders come from films that will have a harder time entering the Best Picture competition, which benefits Gaga. If she’s part of a cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, and Kristen Stewart, voters can turn to lightness and fun, which Gaga clearly is.

Jared Leto, former Oscar winner for “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013) and near-nominee for “The Little Things” earlier this year, could expect to return to the Dolby Theater. Scott is a well known person in the industry who is also one of the producers. His career has been filled with ups and downs, with a few hiccups for good measure. Is this the right one for you? This year, he duplicates “Gucci” and the epic “The Last Duel”, demonstrating that he is continually hungry for new challenges. Thinking back to one of his critically-criticized films, “The Counselor” (2013), we can see hints of the English filmmaker’s desire to tackle a story that is both narratively and artistically rich. His two films might be dividing votes, and the mixed reaction to “The Last Duel” is another issue.

The 164-minute crime drama is likely to divide audiences and critics alike, while it will undoubtedly have ardent fans. Screenwriters Roberto Bentivegna and Becky Johnston adapt Sara Gay Forden’s book “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamor, and Greed” into two alternate narratives that may appeal to members of the writing branch. The Gucci family is at the center of it, with their corruption and betrayal highlighting their rise and impending demise. This element is handled with skillful precision, but the murderous part of the plot comes out of nowhere in such a grand saga. More experienced writers may struggle with the structure, but with the adapted script lacking the depth of rivals, the fun storyline could make a race for the price.

So where else could it gain traction? Dariusz Wolski, who recently received his first Oscar nomination for “News of the World,” gives the film an energetic look that might appeal to the American Society of Cinematographers. Janty Yates (“Gladiator”) designed the costumes, and the film could follow in the footsteps of another Oscar-winning (2017) fashion-obsessed film, “Phantom Thread”. Because Harry Gregson-Williams doesn’t have enough points to win the music branch, voters should focus on “The Last Duel” to give him his first nomination.

The Academy’s acting branch now has ten nominations for Best Picture, making it the largest of the Academy’s many sections. It’s not often that the top class doesn’t coincide with such important figures in these races that Gaga and Leto are vying to win. All I can say is thank your lucky stars that Halloween is gone because Patrizia’s recreations will be everywhere next year.
