Message from Mel to the people of Trim on Braveheart’s birthday

A specially recorded message from Mel Gibson will be one of the highlights of the 25th anniversary screening of Braveheart at Trim on August 13.

The Oscar-winning film was shot in Trim and other local areas from June to October 1994 and was released in 1995. Covid restrictions halted the 25th anniversary event in 2020, but its lights, cameras, action for screening this year.

The event is organized by Trim Tourism Network, a registered non-profit organization made up of business volunteers with the aim of combining the skills of local businesses and individuals to help make Trim a major tourism hub.

“Braveheart 25, Better Late Than Never,” will see the iconic film screened in front of Trim Castle. A great place to stir up memories for those who remember the excitement and buzz the production brought to town 28 years ago. Trim Tourism Network has promised plenty of activity on the day and are delighted to welcome back some of the original film cast for the event.

A specially recorded message from Mel Gibson will be broadcast in the evening. Mel Gibson has always spoken of his fond memories of his time in Trim and the local community that got involved in the filming of the film.

Michael Hughes, President of Trim Tourism Network, believes that this year marks an important trilogy of events in history. “This screening of Braveheart is special for us here at Trim this year. Just as William Wallace fought for freedom all those years ago in Scotland, we see the people of Ukraine fighting for their freedom this year. Of course, this year is also the centenary of the death of Michael Collins – and we will remember him and his fight for our country.

Parallel to the event, a fundraiser is organized to send several humanitarian 4×4 vehicles to Ukraine. To support this effort, the cast of the film sent signed photographs to be framed and auctioned off at the event.
