Real Steel 2 talks finally take place with Hugh Jackman, says director Shawn Levy
Real steel 2 is still a possibility. This October will mark the tenth anniversary of Real steel, the boxing robot drama starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy. Although reviews have been mixed, the film was a box office success, although perhaps not as much as Disney had hoped. Perhaps due to insufficient expectations, a sequel was never made and the world had apparently moved on.
Almost a decade later, Real steel found a new audience when it was released on Netflix during the pandemic last year. Perhaps the film was just a little ahead of its time, as it seems to be as popular as ever after its streaming release. When Real steel Made the Top 10 Most Viewed Titles on Netflix, Levy realized that there might be more potential there. In a new interview with Inverse, Levy reveals that he has since spoken to Jackman about the possibility of making Real steel 2:
“It’s been on my mind and in conversations a lot lately. Maybe because of the fact that when Netflix started streaming it during the lockdown, it became one of their most popular and most popular titles. Which led Hugh and I to talk again about, ‘What is this love for? Real steel? ‘ A little bit of that realization that, ‘Well wait, we like it a lot too.’ We have always loved it so much. It’s one of those “never say never”, even though it seems like the time for that window of opportunity has passed. It’s like that fan love and that audience haven’t gone away. So who knows? “
Real steel is led by Shawn levy. John Gatins wrote the screenplay based on a story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven. With Hugh jackman, the film starred Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand. Set in a world where human boxers have been replaced by robots, Jackman plays a retired boxer who believes he has found the next champion in an abandoned machine.
In April, it was announced that Vin Diesel would star in a Rock ‘Em, Sock’ Em Robots movie. This inspired Real steel fans to demand Real steel 2 instead, something else that shows the film has only grown in popularity since its initial release. If fans want it and both the director and the original star are interested, now seems like a perfect time for a sequel to Real steel, but the decision will depend on whether Disney notices the trend as well.
For now, fans can look forward to the imminent release of Levy’s next film, free guy, which stars Ryan Reynolds as the background character in a video game world who has a chance to become the hero. Jackman is said to have an appearance in the film at some point. For more of Jackman, the beloved actor can also be seen on the big screen this month as the star of Reminiscence, a new science fiction film by Lisa Joy. free guy will be released on August 13 while Reminiscence releases August 20 in theaters and on HBO Max.
