As a show based on a New York Times bestselling book written by Liane Moriarty, Nine Perfect Strangers follows nine stressed-out people as they embark on a life-changing experience in a boutique health and wellness center. Their Russian host, Masha, aims to heal their minds, bodies and souls. However, these “perfect” strangers have no idea what they are for, as Masha’s mission is honorable, but there is an underlying agenda that makes everyone question their true intentions.
Each character is as captivating as the next, and Season 1 has a vibe that always makes you guess what’s to come.
What happened at the end of season 1 of Nine Perfect Strangers?
The short answer? A LOT! It is finally revealed that Masha (Nicole Kidman) gave her guests experimental doses of psychedelics in the hopes of finding a way to reconnect with her deceased daughter, almost like a drug-induced portal to the afterlife. To speed up her experimental process, she gives herself and the Marconi family a dangerously high dose that makes viewers fear for the well-being of the family. To our surprise, psychedelics are doing what they’re supposed to do: allow the family to reconnect with their deceased son once again for a much-needed shutdown. And after years of attempts and a previous death at the complex, Masha finally crosses the threshold that prevented her from seeing her late daughter hallucinating.
While all of this is happening, the other guests are locked in a room padded by Masha’s employee in order to prevent them from interfering with the Marconis experimental session. After understanding Masha’s intentions, they all want to get out. Things go downhill even further when there appears to be a fire in the next room. Fortunately, a former employee of Tranquillum is preparing to alert the police of the reprehensible actions of the complex.
Finally, the “complete strangers” (Samara Weaving, Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, Luke Evans, Regina Hall, and Melvin gregg) learn that the âfireâ was a fake when an employee explained that the smoke was a tactic to help them find peace during a near-death experience.
As Masha meets her daughter who died of drugs, the police arrive to arrest her. Despite all the weird and limiting psychotic experiences at Tranquillum, the “nine complete strangers” leave positively impacted, healed and ready to live life without the baggage they brought to retirement. The final scene shows Masha driving with her daughter in a car on an oceanfront road with a copy of Liane Moriarty’s book on the dashboard. All in all, it seems like a very unexpected but enjoyable happy ending.
One fan summed it up nicely with a comment on Instagram saying, âOMG !!! I have mixed emotions about the ending. I was scared, confused and worried. For the most part, I was relieved and happy to know that everyone was ok. “
So, do we have a season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers?
Good question! Here’s the thing – because the Hulu limited series is based on a single book, we don’t end up with an existing plot to follow after the Season 1 finale. That being said, it wouldn’t be the first time that a of Liane Moriarty’s books would be transformed over several seasons despite the lack of a storyline to follow. Producer and screenwriter David E. Kelley also worked with Nicole to make Big little lies which got a second season although there is no second book to be based on.
- “We want season 2”
- “I wish there were more! I absolutely loved this show!”
- “S2 !!! Please !!! We need it”
- “I think I need another retreat”
- “I just can’t stand it if you don’t continue with a season 2 !!!! And I know Masha was leaving towards sunset but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE S ‘PLEASE PLEASE SAY THERE WILL BE A SEASON 2 !!!!!! “
While there are no official plans for a second season, director Jonathan Levine said Buzzfeed that he already has ideas for Season 2 if he gets the green light. He said in his maintenance, “I hope people enjoy it enough that season 2 is an option. I can certainly imagine where that would go for a second season. The only thing I think would be cool if you could get, like, another group of nine. One of them would be, like, a famous person playing his own part. I wish people wanted more of that. And then it’s about whether we could convince David, the creator of the movie. series, and Nicole. âHe also likes the idea of ââbringing another group ofâ nine complete strangers âinto a retreat for Season 2.
A new cast? New decor? A new group of people whose problems are being treated with hallucinogens? We would definitely watch it and can’t wait for Hulu to make an official announcement following the success of Season 1.
