Taika Waititi says Thor: Love And Thunder is ‘a fantastic movie’ – and cooler than he expected | Movies
There’s a reason why Taika Waititi has become one of the most beloved emerging filmmakers of recent years: simply put, he makes great movies. From his charming coming-of-age stories like Boy and Wild Peoples Huntto high level swings like JoJo Rabbit and What we do in the shadowsat the colorful campy space-opera of Thor: Ragnarok, his films are funny, frank and often excellent. And according to the man himself, his next feature is no different. He is back this summer with Thor: Love and Thunder (since its adaptation of The next goal wins still awaiting its release), and he seems particularly confident in what he’s cooking up next for the Strongest Avenger.
“It’s a fantastic film”, says Waititi Empire in the Summer Preview issue. To the sounds, the filmmaker himself is surprised by what he has in his hands – since his style is to let his films develop organically. “I don’t try to control my films, or how they turn out,” he explains. “I kind of let them appear to me. And with this movie, I’m like, ‘Hey, you’re a little cooler than I originally hoped to be.’ Tonally, this is where I always wanted it.
The goal this time, he says, was “a film about love, with superheroes and outer space” – a film that sees Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster return to Thor’s life as Mighty Thor wielding Mjölnir. And with Chris Hemsworth‘s Asgardian already on a journey of self-discovery, as the film’s first trailer shows, it looks like we’re in for a very different kind of Thor movie – a (somewhat) heartfelt love story. . “I wanted to embrace this thing that I’ve always kind of looked down on, explore this idea of love, and show characters who believe in love,” Waititi explains. “On paper it sounds a bit scary to me, but there’s a way to do it with cool characters that make for a cool movie, and also to have something that no fan ever wants in a great movie. -heroes, that is, people talking about love, and characters kissing.
As always with Waititi, however, nothing quite what you’d expect – and apparently that includes the nature of the romance here. “I think most people will assume the romance is between Chris and Natalie,” he teases. “I can’t promise that what people think will happen in this movie will happen.” Get ready for love to roll like thunder.
