Things you only notice in Lethal Weapon after watching it again

Watching “Lethal Weapon” in the latest restore, in the highest resolution possible and with the pause button ready, is a great way to capture any little details you might have missed. But you will also discover some things that Donner relied on you not to be able to see.

Take for example the iconic scene of Riggs trying to knock a man off a ledge. Since he’s suicidal himself, he’s probably not the best man for the job, and his… let’s say his unique style of policing terrifies the poor guy. Finally, Riggs attaches to the jumper and jumps off the ledge. Fortunately, while Riggs distracted him, the other cops had set up a cushion they could land on safely.

At first glance, you’re probably too caught up in the drama of the moment not to take it at face value. But take another look. These accessory cuffs snap in half when the characters jump. It’s not subtle either – they snap like a rubber band. The stuntmen do what they can to cover it by holding hands, but once you see it, you can’t see it. But movie magic is not that different from regular magic. Secrecy is wrong direction, and as long as you pay attention to the story, you’ll never notice the mistake.
