Ever since Natalie Portman held Mjolnir for the first time on stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2019audiences around the world eagerly awaited the moment when we would finally see her as the Mighty Thor. The moment happened earlier this week with the release of Thor: Love and Thunder first trailer and it was everything we wanted and more. The “more” being the key to this particular story.

Fans of the Marvel Comics Race where Portman’s character, Jane Foster, became the Mighty Thor knew the the story was much more complex. And now, a rogue description on a collectibles site strongly suggests that the movie and the comics share the same bond.

Note: wthe following is, if true, definitely a spoiler for Thor: Love and Thunder but it’s a key element to multi-year Mighty Thor bow if, it’s outside. Be advised.

So earlier this week, Collectibles retailer Eaglemoss unveiled his prop replica of tMighty Thor’s Helmet Thor: Love and Thunder (which you can see above). With it came the following description, according to Slashfilm. (In the meantime, the description has since been tweaked slightly, but we’ll get to that.)

Cancer-stricken astrophysicist and ex-girlfriend of Thor, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life changed forever. Mysteriously, the shattered pieces of Mjolnir, the thunder god’s hammer, transformed her into Mighty Thor and bestowed upon her Thor’s superpowers, to combat internal and external threats. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a divine protector and a new hero was born!

With the help of Thor, Valkyrie and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Mighty Thor was confronted by the mighty Gorr, the God Butcher. Endowed with divine powers himself, Gorr was driven to rid the universe of gods wherever he found them. Battling Cancer in her human form and Gorr in her divine form, Jane Foster was drawn into an epic battle with lots of love and thunder!

Alright now, there’s a lot out there. And before we dive into the implications, let’s stick to the facts. The fact is that this description would have been published on the Eaglemoss site, but at some point it was drastically changed. From the publicationthe entire second paragraph is now gone and the first reads only as follows:

While visiting the shattered pieces of Mjolnir in New Asgard, Jane Foster’s life is changed forever when she mysteriously transforms into Mighty Thor. Now armed with Mjolnir and the power of Thor herself, Jane embraces her new life as a divine protector.

That’s it. No mention of illness, no mention of larger plot implications, just very simple. So what happened and why? io9 contacted Disney, who would not comment on this, and a request for clarification from Eaglemoss has not received a response at the time of publication.

These are the facts. But now let’s dig in. The original description gives the impression that it is quite likely that Thor: Love and Thunder will be follow the comic storyline which is that Jane is stricken with cancer and, once she becomes the Mighty Thor, he keeps disease at bay. The stuff about Gorr coming for the Mighty Thor, not Thor Odinson, appears to be part of the film’s plot, although Gorr took a little into account overall cartoon story.

Now what happened here? We can only speculate, but it seems likely that Eaglemoss had more information than Disney wanted and when Disney found out, he asked them to remove it. Is it possible that Eaglemoss is just following the comics and not the movie script? Sure, but that second paragraph about Gorr and the Guardians does sound like the company had specifics based on the movie. He certainly did when it came to helmet design.

All this leads us to believe that Thor: Love and Thunder will be about a sick Jane Foster becoming The Mighty Thor, Gorr the Butcher God coming to get her, Odinson and the Guardians coming to help her, and ultimately, Good… there is no cure for cancer. Not even in the Marvel Universe.

What? you just thought Thor: Love and Thunder it was going to be big stupid action sequences and lots of laughs? It seems likely that this is not the case. The film opens July 8.
